Frequently Asked Questions
What is your cancellation policy?
Your time and our therapists’ time are valuable. To ensure everyone has the opportunity for care, we kindly ask that cancellations or rescheduling be done at least 48 hours in advance. You can easily cancel or reschedule, by calling us directly @ 905-568-7633. We understand that sometimes things come up unexpectedly. If you need to cancel with less than 48 hours notice, please reach out to us. We’re happy to review special circumstances and may be able to waive the cancellation fee.
How often will I need to attend therapy?
Therapy sessions can be tailored to your needs. While weekly sessions are common, some clients choose bi-weekly, monthly, or even more frequent appointments. This depends on several factors:
- Severity of your concerns: For more pressing issues, more frequent sessions might be helpful initially.
- Urgency of relief: If you need immediate support, a more intensive schedule might be best.
Your progress: As you make gains, you can likely space out sessions.
Many clients start with more frequent sessions to address their initial challenges, then gradually reduce the frequency to maintain progress. Discuss this with your therapist to find the ideal schedule for you.
Do you accept insurance?
Most extended health coverage plans likely cover our therapy services provided by a registered psychotherapist. However, to be certain, we recommend contacting your insurance provider directly.
What can I expect on my first session?
The first session is all about getting to know you! We’ll chat about what brings you to therapy and explore some key experiences that have shaped you. We’ll also discuss your goals for therapy – what changes would you like to see in yourself or your relationships?
Think of therapy like a supportive partnership, similar to seeing a doctor. You might not need frequent visits, but when you do, your therapist is there to help you feel better. While therapy itself may be temporary, the positive effects can last a lifetime.
I noticed you offer Christian Counselling. Do you need to have a Christian or religious background to come to Pathways?
Pathways welcomes and accepts individuals, families, and couples from all backgrounds regardless of their faith affiliation or religious status. While Pathways does offer Christian Counselling and groups with Christian content for those of the Christian faith, our trained counsellors also offer sound secular counselling for those who are of other faiths or do not have any faith affiliation. Clients are always given the choice of incorporating faith into their counselling and clients who do not choose faith based counselling are not discriminated against in any way.
Are your fees covered by OHIP?
Fees for counselling or psychotherapy are not covered by OHIP. Coverage for counselling and psychotherapy is provided by most extended health benefit plans. It is advisable to check to see if you have such coverage through your employer.
How often should I come for counselling?
This is something that the counsellor will discuss during the first counselling session. However, while there may be exceptions, it is generally advisable to plan on scheduling weekly or biweekly sessions. Duration of treatment is dependent on a number of factors, including the severity of the concern for which help is being sought.
Is everything confidential?
Conversations with the counsellor are kept in strict confidence. This includes the handling of files that contain case notes, records, and psychological test results.
If there is a need or desire to disclose information from files with another professional e.g. medical doctor, lawyer, pastor, or third party billing source (for employee benefits, for example), the client will be consulted first and asked to sign a release of information document.
Legal Limitations to Confidentiality:
- Counsellors are required by law to report to the appropriate authorities if there is physical or sexual abuse of a child under the age of 18 or if there is reason to believe a person’s life is in jeopardy.
- If a judge subpoenas a counsellor to testify in court or to release the contents of a file, the counsellor is required to do so.
How long is each appointment?
Appointments are generally 50 minutes long, allowing your therapist 10 minutes between appointments to attend to the file.
What is the difference between a Psychotherapist, Psychologist, and a Psychiatrist?
As Registered Psychotherapists, we employ various treatment methodologies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Talk Therapy, Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), EMDR, Mindfulness Techniques, and others also utilised by Psychologists.
Psychologists are trained in the science of research and clinical counselling. Psychologists cannot prescribe medication, are not covered by OHIP and utilize the same treatment methodologies as Psychotherapists.
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication for the treatment of various mental illnesses such as Bi-Polar disease, Schizophrenia and other disorders associated with a chemical imbalance of the brain.
Is there free parking on location?
