EMDR Therapy can help you:

Heal from traumatic memories & experiences

Regain control over your emotions & reactions

Break free from the weight of anxiety & depression
When the past won’t let you move forward
When we experience trauma, anxiety, or depression, our brains can sometimes struggle to fully process the emotions and memories tied to those experiences. Instead of moving through them naturally, these distressing memories or negative thought patterns can get “stuck” in our brains, almost like they’re frozen in time. This can cause us to relive the pain over and over again—whether it’s through flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, or overwhelming feelings of anxiety or sadness.
EMDR therapy gently unlocks and reprocesses stuck memories so that they no longer have such a powerful hold on you.

What is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy is a specialized, evidence-based approach to help people process and heal from trauma and emotional distress. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR focuses on accessing and processing painful memories that may be stuck or unprocessed in your brain. Through guided eye movements and other bilateral stimulation, EMDR helps reduce the emotional intensity of these memories, allowing you to heal from traumatic experiences, anxiety, and depression.
EMDR doesn’t require you to talk in detail about the trauma if you’re not ready. Instead, it focuses on helping your brain naturally process and store the memories in a less overwhelming way. If you’ve experienced trauma, PTSD, or struggle with anxiety, depression, or phobias, EMDR therapy can help you break free from the emotional pain, allowing you to regain control over your life.

About Us
Why Work With
Pathways Counselling Centre
We believe that everyone has been created for success, happiness, and purpose.
During your lifetime you will inevitably lose your way, feel uncertain, or struggle to understand who you are and what you’re meant to be doing. The demands and pace of our current living environment create a level of expectation and unspoken stress that leaves little room for people to pause and reflect on how they ended up where they are — and what, if anything — can be done to feel and live better.
Pathways Counselling Centre was created to provide a space where people could feel comfortable and safe from their outside worries. Where they can speak freely and openly about their struggles, challenges and aspirations. From the moment you walk in our door, you will feel removed from the external noise of daily living to a soothing environment with sound insulated therapy rooms, a calming atmosphere, and a space where you can truly unwind and start to heal.
With over 40 years of combined experience, we offer solutions where hope thrives, healing is embraced, and strength is discovered. We’re here to help you regain control over your life with compassionate support, holistic care, and a commitment to personal growth.
At Pathways Counselling Centre, We Prioritize:

Our Approach
How EMDR Therapy Works
EMDR Therapy is done as an 8-stage process of healing. The stages can be completed at a comfortable pace that suits your unique needs and emotional readiness, allowing you to feel safe and supported throughout the entire journey.
stage 1
Getting to Know You & Your Story
We begin by understanding who you are, your history, and the specific challenges you're facing. This helps us create a safe and supportive space where you feel comfortable sharing your experiences and setting your therapy goals.
stage 2
Preparing You for the Journey
Before diving into the deeper work, we ensure you're ready by teaching you calming techniques and coping strategies. These tools will help you stay grounded and manage any difficult emotions that may arise during the therapy process.
stage 3
Identifying the Root Issues
Together, we’ll identify the traumatic memories or distressing events that continue to affect your emotional well-being. This stage involves discussing the experiences that are keeping you stuck and setting specific targets for the healing process.
stage 4
Assessing the Emotional Impact
We explore how these memories make you feel—what thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations they trigger. This step helps us understand the full scope of how the trauma is affecting you on multiple levels, which guides the rest of the work.
stage 5
Processing the Painful Memories
Using bilateral stimulation (such as guided eye movements), we help your brain process the traumatic memories. This part of the EMDR therapy process allows your mind to reprocess the memory in a way that reduces its emotional intensity, helping you feel less overwhelmed by it.
stage 5
Installing Positive Beliefs
Once the emotional charge of the traumatic memory has been reduced, we work on replacing the negative beliefs tied to the memory (such as "I’m powerless") with more empowering, positive beliefs (like "I am in control").
stage 7
Scanning the Body for Residual Stress
After processing a memory, we check in with your body to identify if any lingering tension or distress remains. This ensures that the trauma has been fully processed and doesn’t continue to affect you physically.
stage 8
Evaluating & Strengthening for the Future
In the final stage, we review your progress and strengthen the coping skills you've learned throughout therapy. We make sure you feel equipped to handle future challenges with resilience, preventing relapse and empowering you to move forward with confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions About EMDR Therapy
Am I strong enough to face my traumatic memories?
Yes, you are. It’s completely normal to doubt your strength when it comes to facing painful memories, but the fact that you’re considering therapy already shows your resilience. EMDR Therapy is designed to help you process trauma in a way that feels safe and manageable. You won’t have to face everything all at once. Your EMDR therapist will guide you step by step, ensuring you’re equipped with the right tools to handle difficult emotions as they come up. EMDR doesn’t require you to relive the trauma in full detail—it works by gently helping your brain reprocess these memories so they no longer have such a strong hold on you.
What if therapy makes my symptoms worse before they get better?
It’s true that during EMDR therapy, you may experience an increase in emotional intensity or feel tired after sessions, especially in the early stages. Processing trauma can stir up difficult feelings, but these are temporary and part of the healing process. Your therapist will teach you grounding techniques to help manage these emotions between sessions. Over time, as the trauma is processed, the intensity of your symptoms will lessen, and you’ll start to experience relief. Remember, therapy is about healing at your own pace, and your therapist will work with you to ensure you feel safe and supported every step of the way.
Will EMDR actually help me heal from my trauma?
EMDR has been proven to be highly effective in helping people heal from trauma. By reprocessing distressing memories in a structured, safe environment, EMDR allows your brain to release the emotional hold that these memories may have on you. Many people who have gone through EMDR report a significant reduction in symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, and overwhelming emotional responses. While no therapy offers a guarantee, EMDR is backed by extensive research and has helped countless individuals heal from even the most deeply rooted trauma.
Will EMDR help me reduce my anxiety and depression?
Yes, EMDR can help reduce anxiety and depression, especially when these issues are linked to past traumatic experiences. Anxiety and depression often stem from unresolved emotions or negative beliefs about oneself that are tied to trauma. EMDR works by addressing the root cause of these feelings—helping you process difficult memories and replace negative thought patterns with healthier ones. As the emotional weight of these memories is lifted, many people experience a noticeable reduction in their anxiety and depression, as well as an improvement in their overall mood and well-being.
Is EMDR Therapy safe?
Yes, EMDR Therapy is generally considered safe when conducted by a qualified, trained therapist. It’s important to work with a trained EMDR practitioner who understands how to guide you through the process in a way that minimizes distress and maximizes healing. While EMDR involves bringing up distressing memories, your therapist will ensure that you have the tools and coping strategies needed to manage any emotions that arise during the session. The process is designed to move at your own pace, so you’re never pushed to confront more than you’re ready for. As with any therapy, some emotional discomfort may occur as you begin processing difficult memories, but your therapist will work to create a safe, supportive environment to help you through it.
Can EMDR Therapy really help with childhood trauma?
Yes, EMDR is especially effective in addressing the effects of childhood trauma. Many people carry the emotional scars of early traumatic experiences into adulthood, which can manifest as anxiety, depression, trust issues, or other emotional struggles. EMDR helps you access and process these deeply rooted memories safely, allowing you to release the emotional hold they have on your life. Unlike some therapies that focus solely on talking about the trauma, EMDR allows your brain to reprocess these memories without reliving them in detail. This can help you heal from the pain of childhood trauma, change negative beliefs about yourself, and move forward with more emotional freedom and confidence.
Will I relive the trauma during EMDR Therapy?
While EMDR involves revisiting traumatic memories, it’s not about reliving the trauma. You won’t be required to go into every painful detail. Instead, EMDR focuses on helping you process the emotions and thoughts tied to the memory in a way that reduces their intensity. Your therapist will guide you through the process carefully, using bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements) to help your brain reprocess the memory while keeping you grounded in the present. This allows you to address the trauma without becoming overwhelmed by it. Throughout the session, your therapist will ensure that you feel safe and supported, using techniques to help you manage any distress that may come up, so you remain in control during the therapy.
